Carbery, 44, had one year remaining on his initial four-year deal with Washington, according to the report. The extension keeps one of the league's more closely watched young coaches tied to the Capitals after a season that finished short of the playoffs but did not erase the broader progress of his tenure.

Since being hired three years ago, Carbery has led Washington to a 134-83-29 record. Pro Hockey Rumors also noted that he won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL's top coach during the 2024-25 season, a marker of how quickly his stock rose behind the Capitals bench.
His route to that point was not the usual straight-line NHL ascent.
