Bruno Fernandes breaks Premier League assist record with 21 as Manchester United beat Brighton 3-0

The Result Has A Second Meaning

Bruno Fernandes did not need a stage. He built his own. The Manchester United captain set up Patrick Dorgu's opener to claim outright possession of the Premier League assist record with 21, moving clear of Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry's previous mark, before Bryan Mbeumo doubled the lead in first-half stoppage time.

Fernandes then crowned his record-breaking display by adding the third early in the second period, a low finish past Bart Verbruggen after VAR overturned an initial offside call. It was his 21st assist of the season—none of them decorative.

The numbers are doing most of the announcement work here, which is usually how teams prefer it.

The win ensured Michael Carrick marked his first match as permanent manager with a thumping success, though his third-placed side had little to play for in the standings. Brighton, meanwhile, slipped to eighth and must settle for the Conference League—a European berth for only the second time in the club's history.

The Part Worth Keeping

Carrick has delivered 12 wins from 17 top-flight games since taking over from Ruben Amorim, reviving United's Champions League hopes with a two-year contract signed on Friday. His side controlled a largely uneventful first half before accelerating after the break.

Brighton offered little in response. Fabian Hurzeler introduced Yankuba Minteh at half-time, but realistic hopes of a fightback evaporated within three minutes of the restart. Verbruggen denied Dorgu twice, while Diallo and Diego Gomez tested the goalkeeper before Solly March dragged wide late.

The visitors signed off in style, their travelling fans celebrating Manchester City's impending Pep Guardiola departure as much as their own victory. For Brighton, a deflating end to a campaign that promised more.
