Browns could land extra first-round pick from Rams via Garrett trade

Where The Pressure Lands

The Cleveland Browns traded Myles Garrett to the Los Angeles Rams on Monday, sending the defensive end who recorded 23 sacks in 2025 to L.A. in exchange for Jared Verse and three draft picks.

The package includes a 2027 first-round pick, a 2028 second-round pick and a 2029 conditional third-round pick. But the deal contains a twist: if the Rams trade Garrett to an AFC North team before the 2029 NFL Draft, that third-round pick becomes a first-rounder instead.

The numbers are doing most of the announcement work here, which is usually how teams prefer it.

The Detail That Tilts It

Cleveland inserted the clause to block Garrett from ending up with the Steelers, Ravens or Bengals. It's the same structure the Dallas Cowboys used when sending Micah Parsons to Green Bay — if Parsons lands in the NFC East, the Packers owe a 2028 first-round pick.

The Rams have shown willingness to flip star acquisitions quickly. Los Angeles sent two first-round picks to Jacksonville for Jalen Ramsey in 2019, watched him win a Super Bowl and make three Pro Bowls, then traded him to Miami after the 2022 season.

What The Result Leaves

Garrett is 30 and under contract through 2030, so any departure would likely come via trade. Thanks to this condition, the Browns will get a first-round pick from the Rams in 2029 if L.A. tries to send him to a division rival.
