The Denver Broncos have agreed to a new five-year contract with head coach Sean Payton, keeping Payton and general manager George Paton under contract through 2030, Pro Football Rumors reported, citing ESPN's Adam Schefter.
The move follows Denver's five-year extension for Paton last month and keeps the team's two lead football decision-makers aligned for the rest of the decade. Financial terms of Payton's agreement were not reported.
Payton And Paton Are Tied To Denver Through 2030
Broncos owner and CEO Greg Penner said in the team's statement that Payton had led a major turnaround over the past three seasons and praised the partnership between Payton and Paton across football operations.
The timing matters because Denver is choosing continuity after a rapid rebuild under Payton. The extension gives the Broncos a stable front-office and coaching structure before the 2026 season instead of letting the coach's contract become a running subplot.
Payton arrived in Denver in 2023 after the Broncos acquired his rights from the New Orleans Saints for draft-pick compensation. PFR noted that Denver gave up a first- and second-round pick to land him after the Saints retained his rights.
Denver Keeps A Proven NFL Head Coach
Payton's resume remains the central reason the extension carries weight. He coached the Saints for 15 years, went 152-89 in the regular season, reached the playoffs nine times and won Super Bowl XLIV after the 2009 season.
PFR reported that Payton enters 2026 with 184 career wins, 13th on the NFL's all-time coaching list. The Broncos have also shifted some offensive responsibility, with Payton handing primary play-calling duties to offensive coordinator Davis Webb.
