Brazil Call Up Atalanta's Éderson to 2026 World

The Injury Changes the Math

Éderson is heading to the World Cup after all. The Atalanta midfielder, on the verge of a $46.9 million move to Manchester United, has been called up to Brazil's 26-player roster after Roma defender Wesley was ruled out through injury.

The 26-year-old has only three senior caps since debuting in 2024 and was cut from the preliminary squad last month. He'll report to the pre-tournament camp in New York and New Jersey on Monday.

The Immediate Problem

Ancelotti kept faith with Casemiro and Bruno Guimarães in central midfield during both warmup matches against Panama and Egypt. That pairing is likely to start the opener against Morocco on June 13, leaving little room for rotation early in the group stage.

Éderson's situation echoes a familiar World Cup pattern. In 2002, Kléberson had just five caps before the tournament and started on the bench for Athletico Paranaense. By the final, manager Luiz Felipe Scolari said the midfielder was "always the first name on the team list, ahead of players like Ronaldo."

The Calendar Gets Tight

The timing is awkward: a player learning he'll represent his country while finalizing a club transfer across the Atlantic. Whether he features in Qatar or watches from the bench, this call-up changes everything for Éderson's career trajectory.
