Alphonso Davies could return to game action for Bayern Munich in December, with manager Vincent Kompany saying the Canada standout is ahead of the recovery timeline he had been expecting after an ACL injury.
Davies has not played since tearing the ligament while with Canada against the United States in the CONCACAF Nations League. His availability remains one of Canada’s major player-status questions before the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which Canada will co-host.
Kompany told reporters the signs around Davies’ recovery are positive. He had initially hoped the player would be back at the beginning of January, but said the current outlook could put Davies on the pitch sooner if the final stages of rehabilitation continue without a setback.
“It’s definitely looking good,” Kompany said, adding that a few games in December would reflect strong work from everyone involved in the recovery. The Bayern Munich manager also said that, if the process keeps going well, the club could have “a very, very fit Alphonso Davies” back by then.
Davies gave a similarly upbeat update through Bayern Munich, saying he is running and training well. The remaining focus, he said, is building more muscle mass in his right leg.
The soon-to-be 25-year-old also acknowledged the scale of the recovery when doctors first explained how long the injury could take. His reaction at the time was, “Wow, that’s going to be a long journey,” but Davies said the situation is now looking good.
The injury came after Davies appeared to fall awkwardly while challenging for the ball in the Canadian penalty box. He left the match in the 12th minute while favouring his knee, and his agent later accused Canada of pressuring him to play despite being less than 100 per cent.
Canada have continued without Davies and sit No. 28 in the latest FIFA rankings after falling two spots. In 10 games since the injury, Canada have five wins, three losses and two draws.
