Alphonso Davies is facing another spell out of Bayern Munich’s lineup after the club announced that the Canada left-back tore a muscle in his thigh during the 6-1 win over Atalanta in the first leg of a Round of 16 tie.
Bayern Munich did not provide a recovery timeline for the 25-year-old Edmonton product. The injury continues a stop-start season for Davies, who had only just returned after missing the previous 2 weeks with a similar muscle problem sustained in a 3-2 win over Eintracht on Feb. 21.
Davies entered the Atalanta match at the start of the second half in place of Konrad Laimer. He made an immediate contribution by setting up Michael Olise’s 64th-minute goal, but soon after he bent over in pain near midfield and had to leave the match.
He was able to walk to the sideline without assistance, though he was clearly uncomfortable. The appearance was his first since the Eintracht match and his 13th in all competitions this season.
Davies began the season late after recovering from an ACL injury suffered last spring while on international duty. He is in his eighth season with Bayern after arriving from Vancouver Whitecaps.
The latest injury also puts his Canada availability in question for the next international window. Jesse Marsch’s side is scheduled to face Iceland on Mar. 28 and Tunisia on Mar. 31 at Toronto BMO Field.
Bayern had other injury issues in the same match. Goalkeeper Jonas Urbig is out with a concussion, while Germany forward Jamal Musiala aggravated an ankle injury that originally occurred last summer.
Vincent Kompany’s team remains top of the Bundesliga with 66 points, 11 ahead of Borussia Dortmund. Bayern’s next match is a visit to Bayer Leverkusen.
