A defendant in the 2024 athlete home burglaries case was sentenced to 24 months in prison in a Tennessee federal courtroom, ESPN reported, marking the first guilty-plea sentencing outcome in a case tied to NBA and NFL players.
24-Month Sentence In Athlete Burglary Case
Judge Thomas L. Parker sentenced Alexander Esteban Huaiquil-Chavez after he pleaded guilty in March to one count of interstate transportation of stolen property. ESPN, citing court records, reported that Huaiquil-Chavez received credit for time served since Jan. 10, 2025.
The sentence means his prison term would end in early 2027, according to ESPN's account. He also received $100 in monetary penalties, with restitution to be determined later.
Federal authorities had listed Huaiquil-Chavez as part of a theft group made up of Chilean nationals accused of breaking into homes of athletes across the country and stealing cash, jewelry and weapons.
Ja Morant Home Burglary Cited In Tennessee Case
The Tennessee claim in the complaint involved a burglary at the home of a Memphis Grizzlies player later confirmed by ESPN's Tim McMahon to be Ja Morant.
ESPN reported that around $1 million in watches, jewelry and luxury bags were stolen from Morant's home while the Grizzlies hosted the Golden State Warriors on Dec. 19, 2024.
Huaiquil-Chavez's attorney, Taurus Bailey, asked before sentencing that his client not receive supervised release because of expected immigration issues after his prison term. ESPN reported that Bailey wrote Huaiquil-Chavez had overstayed his visa and could face immigration detention and deportation after release.
Joe Burrow Case Remains On Court Calendar
ESPN reported that Sergio Andres Cabello, Bastian Alejandro Morales and Jordan Francisco Sanchez were also indicted in the Memphis case, though the current status of those cases was unclear.
Those three defendants also face charges in Ohio federal court related to the burglary at the home of Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow. Huaiquil-Chavez was arrested with them in Ohio in January 2025.
According to ESPN, the judge in the Ohio case involving Cabello, Morales and Sanchez has allowed continuances for plea negotiations. The next status conference in that case is scheduled for July 8.
