Antonio Conte leaves Napoli after two years, hints at next move amid Italy manager speculation

Where The Pressure Lands

NAPLES, Italy — Antonio Conte confirmed Sunday that he is leaving Napoli after two years in charge, having guided the southern club back to the Serie A title in his first season.

The 56-year-old Conte held a press conference alongside club president Aurelio De Laurentiis following Napoli's final match of the campaign, a 1-0 win over Udinese. He told the president a month earlier that he sensed the project was reaching its end.

The matchup already has enough history; the job is to keep the reading list shorter than the tension.

"I made this decision because at Napoli I failed in one thing: I didn't bring unity to the environment," Conte said. "It's difficult to compete with others when you haven't united everyone."

The Detail That Tilts It

Napoli finished second in Serie A this season, hampered by injury problems throughout the campaign. When Conte was hired in 2024 on a three-year contract, the club was coming off a dismal defense of its previous title, finishing 10th in the league — one of the worst championship defenses in Serie A history.

Conte previously coached Juventus and Inter Milan to domestic titles, along with stints at Chelsea and Tottenham in the Premier League. He led Italy to the quarterfinals of the 2016 European Championship, where the Azzurri lost to Germany in a penalty shootout.

The Italian national team remains in turmoil after failing to qualify for the World Cup for the third consecutive time. FIGC president Gabriele Gravina and coach Gennaro Gattuso both resigned last month.

What The Result Leaves

When pressed about the Italy job, Conte offered no clarity. "It's all just talk," he said. "I don't know anything about my future. I might well take time out and rest."

His departure marks the end of a combustible chapter between two strong personalities who won a title together but never quite found steady ground afterward.
