Koné completes permanent move to Sassuolo from Marseille in €13M deal

Sassuolo has exercised the clause in its loan deal with Marseille to make the signing of Ismaël Koné permanent, the club announced on Monday.

The 23-year-old Canadian midfielder has scored four goals in 20 league appearances this season.

Transfer Details

Fabrizio Romano reports the transfer is worth €13 million.

Koné made 21 appearances across all competitions for Sassuolo and scored in Saturday's 3-1 win over Pisa.

Career History

A product of the CF Montreal academy, Koné made his senior debut for the team in early 2022. After his first Major League Soccer season, he moved to Europe with Championship side Watford following the 2022 FIFA World Cup.

He spent 18 months in England before joining Ligue 1 side Marseille in a £15 million move in the summer of 2024.

However, the transfer wasn't smooth. Koné quickly clashed with manager Roberto De Zerbi, including an infamous bust-up during a training session caught by team cameras.

He was loaned out to Rennes in January after only eight appearances for Marseille, then joined promoted Sassuolo on loan before the deal was made permanent.

International Career

Koné has been capped 37 times by Canada since his senior debut in 2022. He has scored four goals for his country, including a goal in the third-place match against Uruguay at the 2024 Copa America.
