Ben White's season is over and so might be his FIFA World Cup dream. Arsenal announced Tuesday that the England right-back will miss the remainder of the campaign with a "significant" MCL injury, putting his World Cup hopes in serious jeopardy.
Injury Details
White, 28, incurred the injury during Arsenal's dramatic 1-0 win over West Ham on Sunday. The defender, handed a start by Mikel Arteta, was forced off in the 28th minute and replaced by Martin Zubimendi.
The injury marks another setback in a series of ailments that have plagued White over recent years. He was limited to just 17 league appearances last season with a knee injury and missed time this campaign with a hamstring injury.
World Cup Implications
Missing the World Cup would be a cruel blow for the Southampton and Brighton youth product. White was recalled to the national setup for the first time in nearly four years this past March, making two appearances for Thomas Tuchel.
White previously had a falling out with former manager Gareth Southgate and withdrew from the England squad at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, exiting just before the team's group-stage finale.
Arsenal's Title Race
With the victory over West Ham, Arsenal sits five points clear of Manchester City atop the Premier League table with two matches remaining. City, however, holds a game in hand.
The Gunners return to action on Monday with a visit from already-relegated Burnley. Should City fail to defeat Crystal Palace on Wednesday, Arsenal would secure the title with a victory.
