During Game 2 of the 2026 Stanley Cup Playoffs between the Los Angeles Kings and Colorado Avalanche, a bizarre moment unfolded that left everyone at Ball Arena stunned.
Fans Shatter Glass Behind Kings Bench
In the second period, Avalanche fans went wild after goaltender Scott Wedgewood robbed Kings forward Quinton Byfield on a penalty shot attempt. The save was tremendous — Byfield had Wedgewood down and out before the netminder snapped out his glove to deny what would have been the game's first goal.
However, one overzealous fan behind the visitors' bench kept pushing and pushing on the glass. Kings interim coach D.J. Smith took notice and tried to warn the crowd, but it was too late.
"After the penalty shot, the guy just kept pushing and pushing and pushing," Smith said. "I looked back because it hit me a bunch of times, and then it broke."
The glass shattered and rained down upon Smith and the Kings bench. Luckily, it wasn't actual glass — the NHL uses Plexiglass around the rink — so while Smith might be fishing pieces of it out of his suit for the next month, there was no harm done. There was a 15-20 minute delay as the arena crew cleaned up the broken glass and installed a new panel.
Avalanche Win Game 2 in Overtime
By the end of the night, Avalanche fans had even more reason to celebrate. After Artemi Panarin gave the Kings a late 1-0 lead with a power play goal, Colorado captain Gabriel Landeskog tied the score with 3:35 remaining in regulation, and Nicolas Roy scored the game-winner in overtime.
The Avalanche now takes a 2-0 series lead over Los Angeles heading into Game 3 at Crypto.com Arena. They'll just have to hope the home crew reinforces the glass behind their bench this time.
