Danny Welbeck could be set for a shock England return after being named in Thomas Tuchel's 55-man provisional squad for the FIFA World Cup.
The 35-year-old Brighton forward, who hasn't played for England since 2018, earned his surprise call-up after a remarkable season with the Seagulls.
Impressive Season Form
Welbeck has scored 13 Premier League goals this season – more than any other English-born player. The Manchester native has now hit back-to-back seasons with double-digit goals for the first time in his 17-year top-flight career.
He has been capped 42 times for England, scoring 16 goals, and appeared at three major tournaments: Euro 2012, and the World Cups in 2014 and 2018.
World Cup Squad Details
The provisional squad must be cut to 26 players by June 1, with England aiming to release their final team by May 22.
England could take up to seven forwards to North America. Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), Anthony Gordon (Newcastle) and Bukayo Saka (Arsenal) are virtual locks.
Other forwards in contention include Phil Foden (Manchester City), Cole Palmer (Chelsea), Eberechi Eze (Arsenal), Ollie Watkins (Aston Villa) and Marcus Rashford (Manchester United, currently on loan at Barcelona).
Group Stage Opener
The Three Lions will face Croatia in their first World Cup match on June 17 at AT&T Stadium in Dallas.
England have been drawn in Group L alongside Croatia, Ghana and Panama.
