Kane's Late Penalty Keeps Bayern Unbeaten in Draw vs Mainz

Harry Kane's late penalty ensured Bayern Munich maintained their unbeaten start to the Bundesliga season, but they were held to a surprise 2-2 draw by rock-bottom Mainz at the Allianz Arena.

A share of the spoils meant Bayern dropped points for the first time at home this season, while Mainz earned an unlikely point to move within four of safety.

Key Moments

Bayern took the lead after 29 minutes when Lennart Karl scored his third Bundesliga goal of the season, tapping in from close range after Serge Gnabry's cutback.

Mainz stunned the hosts by turning the contest on its head with strikes either side of halftime from Kacper Potulski and Lee Jae-Sung.

The visitors took a shock lead with a quarter of the game to play when Bell lofted a ball into the area, where Lee produced a stunning diving header past Manuel Neuer.

Bayern looked set for unexpected defeat until Potulski brought down Kane inside the area and the England captain stepped up to send Batz the wrong way from the spot.

Kane's Milestone

The goal for Kane was his 50th for Bayern in 2025, making it the first time the England captain hit the half-century mark for club in his illustrious career.

Kane converted a penalty for his 80th Bundesliga goal, but they dropped points for just the second time this season.

Match Flow

Bayern had all of the ball in the opening quarter-of-an-hour and Karl put the game's first effort on target straight down the throat of Mainz goalkeeper Daniel Batz.

Mainz almost opened the scoring with their very first attack in the 17th minute when Lee met a cross from the left and his header hit the crossbar.

Kane, fresh from a hat trick against Stuttgart last weekend, then got his head to Michael Olise's cross but saw his effort palmed away magnificently by Batz.

Against the run of play, Mainz got themselves level with the last kick of the half. William Boving's free kick was lifted into Potulski, who nodded it straight into the bottom left corner.

Bayern spurned a big chance to go back in front when Gnabry ran on to Karl's deep cross but was unable to hit the target with his volley.

Bayern committed men forward but were in danger of being undone on the counter, Lennard Maloney almost catching Neuer off his line with an effort from halfway which bounced wide.
