Como will play in the Champions League next season. That is the club's first-ever appearance in any continental competition, ending a 119-year wait.
The club finished fourth in Serie A on Sunday, qualifying alongside Roma after a dramatic final day. Como won 4-1 at Cremonese, while AC Milan lost 2-1 at home to Cagliari and Juventus drew 2-2 at Torino.
The matchup already has enough history; the job is to keep the reading list shorter than the tension.
"When I arrived four years ago as a player we changed in a bar. Today we're in the Champions League," manager Cesc Fàbregas said after the match. His press conference was interrupted by overjoyed players who wheeled in a speaker playing the Champions League anthem and doused him with water.
Roma finished third, two points ahead of Como. Milan ended one point behind in fifth.
Seven years in the fourth division
Como's rise is striking. The club was in Serie D, the fourth tier of Italian soccer, just seven years ago. The Indonesian tobacco billionaire brothers Robert Budi Hartono and Michael Bambang Hartono purchased the club in 2019.
Fàbregas noted the squad is young: "The 15 players who played the most are nearly all under 23."
Elsewhere, Napoli beat Udinese 1-0 in Antonio Conte's final match in charge, finishing second in the standings. Lecce beat Genoa 1-0 to secure Serie A safety.
