The Lead Is Simple
The man who reinvented goalkeeping is staying put. Manuel Neuer has extended his Bayern Munich contract by another year, keeping the 40-year-old captain between the posts as he settles into a role that parts ways with tradition: mentorship while still competing for the starting spot.
The extension was announced on Friday, a day before Bayern's final Bundesliga home match of the season against Cologne. It marks Neuer's 15th year at the club, and with 597 appearances already, he's on track to become just the fifth player in Bayern history to reach 600 matches.
The matchup already has enough history; the job is to keep the reading list shorter than the tension.
That sort of milestone does not require announcement fanfare; the number speaks for itself.
The Detail That Matters
Jonas Urbig, the younger backup viewed as Neuer's long-term successor, has seen increased playing time this season. Both men will continue working together, with Sven Ulreich also signing a new deal.
"Manuel and Sven will continue to support Jonas on his path to becoming the future of FC Bayern," Bayern board member for sport Max Eberl said in a statement.
Neuer claimed his 13th Bundesliga title with Bayern a month ago. The club can add a domestic double if it defeats Stuttgart in the German Cup final on May 23. It's the first time since 2020 such a double has been within reach.
The Road From Here
The timing matters, even if Neuer's fitness has required careful management this season. He delivered strong performances in the Champions League when called upon, and Bayern clearly still views him as the first choice. At 40, that says something about the standard he maintains.
