Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Jesús Sánchez was removed from Sunday's game against the Baltimore Orioles after being struck by a thrown ball from the stands, suffering a right wrist contusion.
Injury timeline
The incident occurred during the bottom of the sixth inning at Camden Yards, while Blue Jays pitching coach Pete Walker was conducting a mound visit with reliever Hayden Juenger. Sánchez, stationed in right field, suddenly removed his glove and grabbed his right wrist. Trainers attended to him immediately, and he was replaced by Yohendrick Piñango.
The title of the job changes quickly; the explanation usually takes a little longer to catch up.
X-rays taken after the game came back negative. The Orioles later announced they had identified the fan responsible and ejected them from the premises. Blue Jays manager John Schneider described it as a miscommunication between Sánchez and the young fan.
What the numbers say
Sánchez is batting.287 with a.324 on-base percentage and.461 slugging this season, providing the Blue Jays with power from the outfield. He has hit six home runs and 11 doubles in 57 games. Toronto acquired him in February from the Houston Astros in exchange for Joey Loperfido.
The Orioles won 9-5. The result dropped the defending American League champions to 29-31 on the season, while Baltimore moved to 28-32.
