Three American Olympians set for unprecedented Stanley Cup Final showdown

A gold‑medal team now split across the final

Jack Eichel, Noah Hanifin and Jaccob Slavin helped Team USA win the gold medal at the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan, ending a 46‑year drought for U.S. men’s hockey. Just four months later, Eichel and Hanifin will be on the ice for the Vegas Golden Knights while Slavin suits up for the Carolina Hurricanes in the 2026 Stanley Cup Final.

It’s not every day you see Olympic teammates become Stanley Cup opponents so quickly.

The matchup already has enough history; the job is to keep the reading list shorter than the tension.

Who joins the tiny double‑dip club?

If either the Golden Knights or the Hurricanes hoist the Cup, that player will become only the second American—and the first in 46 years—to win an Olympic gold and a Stanley Cup in the same season. Only eight players in history have ever managed that feat; the lone American to do it before was Ken Morrow.

Ken Morrow was a defenseman on the 1980 “Miracle on Ice” team and signed with the New York Islanders right after, helping the franchise win four straight Cups from 1980‑83. His double came 18 years before NHL players were first allowed to compete at the Olympics.

The most recent to pull off the double were Canada’s Drew Doughty and Jeff Carter, who won gold at the 2014 Games before capturing the Cup with the Los Angeles Kings.

A brief wait for American fans

The U.S. had to wait 46 years after its 1980 gold to see another one; now it may only take a few weeks to see a second American achieve the same seasonal double.
