The Main Point
A record 1,248 players representing 48 nations have been named to final World Cup rosters released by FIFA on Tuesday. The lists include Lionel Messi of Argentina, Cristiano Ronaldo of Portugal and Mexico's Guillermo Ochoa, who will become the first player from the region to appear in six World Cups.
The age span alone covers more than 25 years. Scotland's Craig Gordon is 43 years and 162 days old, making him the tournament's most senior figure, while Mexico's Gilberto Mora is just 17 years and 240 days old—one of 22 players under 20. Seven players are 40 or older.
The matchup already has enough history; the job is to keep the reading list shorter than the tension.
The Tension Underneath
Of the 1,248 selected, roughly 891 are set for their first World Cup appearance. That leaves 357 veterans who have been through this before, some many times over.
Four nations—Cape Verde, Curaçao, Jordan and Uzbekistan—will make their World Cup debuts in the event co-hosted by Canada, the United States and Mexico. In total, the tournament will feature 104 matches across the three host nations.
The Next Step
Roster changes are strictly limited under FIFA rules. Teams may replace injured or ill players only up to 24 hours before their first match, and any exception requires approval from football's governing body.
