The Result Carries Weight
MUNICH — Manuel Neuer will spend another year at Bayern Munich. The 40-year-old captain and first-choice goalkeeper has extended his contract, keeping him at the German champion through next season.
The timing is notable: Neuer joined Bayern 15 years ago and is now on 597 appearances for the club. He is set to become the fifth player in Bayern history to reach 600 matches. That milestone typically arrives with a fanfare of gratitude. Here, it arrives with a quietly different context.
The Moment That Swung It
Jonas Urbig is identified as Neuer's long-term successor and has started appearing in more games this season. The announcement on Friday confirmed what has been increasingly obvious on the pitch — Neuer is both still playing and officially mentoring his replacement. Sven Ulreich, the long-time understudy, also signed another year.
"Manuel and Sven will continue to support Jonas on his path to becoming the future of FC Bayern," board member for sport Max Eberl said in a statement.
The Race Tightens
Neuer won his 13th German league title with Bayern a month ago. The season closes at home to Cologne on Saturday, with the German Cup final against Stuttgart scheduled for May 23. A domestic double would be the first since 2020.
Fitness questions persisted through the campaign. They were resolved enough for Neuer to start in the Champions League. Enough, apparently, for another year.
