Moïse Bombito exits friendly after 30 minutes, CanMNT says no new injury

The injury concerns around Canada's men's national team persist—and the y involve more than one star defender.

A familiar walk, an unfamiliar script

Moïse Bombito started in Canada's international friendly against Uzbekistan at Edmonton's Commonwealth Stadium on Monday, but departed at halftime walking what TSN's Matthew Scianitti described as "gingerly." He had ice on his left leg as he made his way to the locker room with trainers—the same leg he broke in October 2025 while playing for Ligue 1 side Nice.

The record does not need much decoration; it already does the talking.

The CanMNT quickly stated Bombito does not have a new injury and that his minutes and substitution were "by design," citing the rainy and wet playing conditions in Edmonton as the reason for the planned exit.

First minutes, familiar discomfort

The 26-year-old played exactly 30 minutes on Monday—his first game action for the national team since suffering the broken tibia. He slipped early while attempting to defend an Uzbekistan breakaway before clearing the ball with a sliding effort a few minutes later.

Following the 2-0 win, Bombito was seen walking with his team, this time with no noticeable limp and no ice on his leg. He told Scianitti he had 30 minutes in him for Monday's game and felt "sore."

The Montreal native has 19 career appearances for Canada, dating back to 2023.

The World Cup room keeps growing

Bombito is far from the only major question mark for Canada entering the tournament. Alphonso Davies was seen jogging around the pitch at Commonwealth Stadium, but his status for the opener against Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 12 remains uncertain. Marcelo Flores was also lost for the tournament over the weekend due to a ruptured ACL.

Canada plays Ireland in Montreal on Friday in its last pre-World Cup tune-up—though "tune-up" feels like a generous word given how many notes are already missing.
