Real Madrid May Need €15 Million to Pry Mourinho from Benfica

José Mourinho's prospect ive return to Santiago Bernabéu comes with a price tag that has climbed significantly since early talks. According to reports, prying the manager away from Benfica could cost Real Madrid as much as €15 million ($17.5 million).

The figure marks a steep rise from earlier estimations of €3–6 million. That lower buyout clause was tied to a narrow window—10 working days following Benfica's season finale—and expired on Friday, May 29. Madrid were unable to formalize an agreement with in that timeframe.

That is usually how club statements work: the wording stays calm while the room clearly has not.

The delay stems from an unexpected variable: Florentino Pérez called a presidential election on May 12, pushing the vote forward to June 7. While Pérez, the 79-year-old incumbent, is widely expected to win, the election introduces a layer of uncertainty that kept the club from locking in Mourinho sooner.

Mourinho is still under contract with Benfica. The Athletic reports he has already agreed to a three-year deal to return to Madrid, pending Pérez's re-election. His expected arrival would bring a familiar support team: assistants Joao Tralhao and Pedro Machado, alongside backroom staff Roberto Merella, Antonio Dias and Nuno Santos.

The election footnote

Pérez has not publicly attached Mourinho to his campaign platform. His opponent, 37-year-old green energy entrepreneur Enrique Riquelme, has stated he would pursue a different direction if elected—and claims to have already arranged terms with another manager entirely.

If Pérez secures the vote as anticipated, Mourinho could be confirmed shortly after June 7, giving Madrid a window to finalize arrangements before the World Cup begins.
