Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Jesús Sánchez was removed from Sunday's game at Camden Yards after being struck by a ball thrown from the stands, the team announced postgame. X-rays came back negative and he was diagnosed with a right wrist contusion.
The innings unfolds
The incident occurred during the bottom of the sixth inning, with the Or ioles leading 9-5. Sánchez, playing right field, removed his glove and grabbed his right wrist as trainers approached. He was replaced by Yohendrick Piñango.
That is usually how club statements work: the wording stays calm while the room clearly has not.
Blue Jays manager John Schneider later described it as a miscommunication between Sánchez and the young fan who threw the ball. The Or ioles confirmed the y identified the fan and removed the m from the premises.
Sánchez' season outlook
The 28-year-old is hitting.287/.324/.461 with six home runs and 11 doubles across 57 games this year. Toronto acquired him in February from the Houston Astros in exchange for Joey Loperfido.
Sunday's result dropped the defending American League champions to 29-31 on the season. The Or ioles moved to 28-32.
