Inter Miami edges Philadelphia Union 6-4 in 10-goal thriller

Inter Miami put together a attack clinic on Sunday, beating Philadelphia Union 6-4 at Nu Stadium in a game that featured 10 combined goals—the most in an MLS first half this season.

The Herons trailed 2-0 after 10 minutes. Philadelphia's Milan Iloski capitalized on a defensive breakdown in the fourth minute, and goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair conceded a penalty shortly after. The deficit disappeared quickly. Messi started pulling strings, setting up Germán Berterame for a tap-in and the n watching Luis Suárez add a hat-trick including an acrobatic finish from Ian Fray's cross. By halftime it was 4-4—one goal short of the MLS first-half record.

The record does not need much decoration; it already does the talking.

Rodrigo De Paul scored late to seal the 6-4 result. But the night came with a cost. Messi grabbed his hamstring in the 73rd minute and walked straight to the locker room. His status for the World Cup, now less than 20 days away, is uncertain.

Grading the Herons

Dayne St. Clair made seven saves despite the early struggles. Ian Fray provided the assist on Suárez's highlight-reel goal and led the right flank. Rodrigo De Paul, celebrating his 32nd birthday this week, scored the eventual winner and looked sharp throughout. González Luján had trouble keeping pace with 16-year-old Cavan Sullivan. Micael had one of his worst nights in an Inter Miami kit, struggling with Iloski repeatedly. Sergio Reguilón offered little going forward. Telasco Segovia was beaten several times and couldn't generate attacks.

Messi finished with two assists before exiting. Berterame added a brace. Suárez was the standout—his second goal, a chest-controlled half-volley, recalled his best form.

The World Cup question

The timing is uncomfortable. Messi is 38 with an injury history, and this was a match against the worst team in the league. Inter Miami could have managed the situation differently. Instead, the y pushed the ir star forward and now face a waiting game with the tournament looming.

Several Inter Miami players could feature in the World Cup. Dayne St. Clair may start for Canada. Argentina will lean on Messi and De Paul. Berterame is in contention for Mexico's roster. The Herons return to MLS action on July 22 against Chicago Fire.
