Alphonso Davies went for a light jog around Commonwealth Stadium on Monday evening, a small but visible step in his recovery from a hamstring injury sustained during Bayern Munich's Champions League semi-final second leg last month.
The Canada international was absent from the starting lineup for the friendly against Uzbekistan, but the public workout offered a glimmer of optimism fewer than two weeks before the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off.
The record does not need much decoration; it already does the talking.
"Obviously, all depending on whether I'm fit enough to make that. Time will tell, and I can't really say right now," Davies told reporters after the match.
Roster Status Remains Uncertain
Canada's manager, Jesse Marsch, struck a cautious tone when discussing Davies' availability for the World Cup opener on June 12 against Bosnia and Herzegovina in Toronto.
"Yes, I think Alphonso will play in the World Cup. No, I don't think he'll be ready quite on June 12. But we'll see," Marsch said.
Davies was formally included in Canada's squad during Friday's roster announcement. The 25-year-old defender managed one goal across 23 appearances for Bayern Munich this season.
A Historic Mark on the Line
For Canada, Davies carries significant weight. He has scored 15 goals in 58 international appearances and notably delivered Canada's first-ever goal at the men's World Cup during the 2022 tournament in Qatar against Croatia.
After facing Uzbekistan, Canada continues its World Cup preparations with a friendly against Ireland on Friday at Saputo Stadium in Montreal.
Canada's Group B schedule: June 12 vs Bosnia and Herzegovina (Toronto), June 18 vs Qatar (Vancouver), June 24 vs Switzerland (Vancouver).
