MEXICO CITY — Mexico coach Javier Aguirre unveiled a revamped squad Sunday, leaning heavily on a new generation as El Tri looks to move past one of its darkest chapters.
The overhaul includes 13 players who were not part of the roster four years ago, when Mexico failed to advance from the group stage for the first time since 1978.
The Youngest Bid
The most notable addition is 17-year-old midfielder Gilberto Mora. Should he appear at the World Cup, he would break the record set by Manuel "Chaquetas" Rosas, who was 18 years and 88 days old when he played in 1930.
Seven players have appeared at a World Cup at age 17, most recently Northern Ireland's Norman Whiteside in 1982. Mora could become the sixth or seventh youngest in tournament history depending on his debut timing.
Mexico opens group play against South Africa on June 11 at the Azteca stadium.
Returning Veteran
Goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, whose tournament career began in 2006, returns for his sixth World Cup selection—the most of any Mexican player. He currently serves as backup to Raúl Rangel.
After facing South Africa, Mexico plays South Korea in Guadalajara and closes group-stage action against Czechia on June 24.
The team carries a seven-match unbeaten streak into the tournament and has one remaining warmup against Serbia.
