What Happened
PARIS — Paris Saint-Germain advanced to its second consecutive Champions League final and third since 2020 on Thursday, dispatching Bayern Munich to set up a May 30 showdown with Arsenal in Budapest.
The victory sparked the usual celebrations. It also produced 127 arrests across the Paris metropolitan area — 107 with in the city itself — as fans clashed with police outside Parc des Princes and along the Champs-Élysées. Eleven rioters were injured, including one seriously, while 23 officers sustained minor wounds.
Why It Matters
"Hundreds of individuals look to clash with law enforcement whenever the se festivities occur," interior minister Laurent Nuñez said. He emphasized that police successfully prevented property damage and looting.
Security will be heightened for the final. Nuñez noted that future plans for a Paris fan zone require further consultation.
What Comes Next
This is not with out precedent. When PSG captured the Champions League last year, authorities made more than 500 arrests nationwide. The club's 2020 final loss to Bayern triggered 148 arrests in a single night. A man in his twenties died in Paris that year when his scooter collided with a car during post-match celebrations.
