Or lando Magic Hire Sean Sweeney as Head Coach After Dismissing Mosley

The Or lando Magic have hired San Antonio Spurs assistant coach Sean Sweeney to replace Jamahl Mosley, the team announced Monday. Mosley was dismissed earlier this month following Or lando's first-round exit from the 2026 NBA Playoffs.

From San Antonio to Or lando

Sweeney arrives in Or lando after serving as an associate head coach with the Spurs this season. He is currently with San Antonio as the team competes in the Western Conference Finals against the Oklahoma City Thunder.

"We're excited to welcome Sean to the Or lando Magic family," president of basketball operations Jeff Weltman said in a statement. "Sean brings a tremendous work ethic and a high degree of intensity that set the tone for everything he does. His attention to detail and ability to communicate and teach the game clearly stands out."

Before officially stepping into the role, Sweeney will finish out the season with the Spurs. If San Antonio advances past the Thunder, the franchise would face the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals.

A Familiar Path

Sweeney's coaching journey includes stops with the Brooklyn Nets, Milwaukee Bucks and Dallas Mavericks as an assistant. He drew interest from both the Bulls and Mavericks during this hiring cycle before landing in Or lando.

The hire comes after the Magic blew a 3-1 lead in the ir first-round series against Detroit, losing in seven games. The or ganization's hopes of evaluating whether a Paolo Banchero-Franz Wagner pairing could work were complicated when Wagner missed the final three games with an injury.

What Sweeney Brings

Defensively, the Magic should remain solid. Spurs star Victor Wembanyama praised Sweeney following San Antonio's Game 1 win against the Thunder in the West Finals—an endorsement that suggests Or lando's defensive identity won't erode under the new head coach.

The more pressing issue is an offensive unit that often looked predictable this season. Adding shooting depth would help, though revolutionizing the attack may require more than roster tweaks alone.

Hiring Sweeney gives the Magic a credible voice in the locker room and a fresh system to evaluate. Whether he can unlock Banchero and Wagner's full potential remains the central question heading into next season—one that won't answer itself overnight.
