Derwin James signing four-year extension with Chargers, to become highest-paid safety in NFL for sec

The Los Angeles Chargers have secured their cornerstone defensive back for the foreseeable future.

Star safety Derwin James agreed on Tuesday to a four-year contract extension worth $75.6 million, per CBS Sports NFL insider Jonathan Jones. The deal features $57.5 million in guaranteed money and pays $25.2 million annually, marking the second time James has reset the safety market.

James was scheduled to hit unrestricted free agency following the 2026 season. The Chargers acted proactively to prevent any bidding war next offseason, locking up the five-time All-Pro selection through the end of the decade.

"I've called him the best safety I've ever seen in the history of the National Football League," Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh said last September. "He is one of the most incredible players I've ever watched."

The Florida State product has spent his entire career in Los Angeles after the franchise selected him with the No. 17 overall pick in the 2018 draft. Despite injuries limiting his production during his first three professional seasons, James has been a reliable presence in the secondary since 2021.

For five consecutive seasons, James has recorded at least 93 tackles and five passes defensed. Last year, he matched a career high with three interceptions.

His statistical resume speaks for itself. Among defensive backs, James ranks second in sacks since 2018 with 19.0, trailing only Jamal Adams. He also became the only safety in the Super Bowl era to earn first-team All-Pro honors as a rookie.

James previously held the distinction of being the highest-paid safety in league history in 2022 when he signed a four-year rookie extension averaging $19.1 million annually. That arrangement expires at the conclusion of the current campaign.
