Lce win condemns Pisa and Verona to Serie A relegation

PISA, Italy (AP) — Lecce beat Pisa 2-1 on Friday, sending the Tuscan club back to Serie B after just one season in the top flight.

Pisa was promoted from Serie B a year ago but goes down after a dismal campaign. The club has won only two of its 35 Serie A matches this season.

The result also sealed relegation for Verona, which sits second-from-bottom with 19 points—just one more than Pisa. Lecce now sits fourth-to-last with 32 points, four clear of the relegation zone.

Match details

Lameck Banda put Pisa ahead in the 52nd minute, but Mehdi Léris equalized just four minutes later.

Walid Cheddira scored the winning goal in the 65th minute, giving Lecce three crucial points with three matches remaining.

Venezia clinches promotion

Venezia secured its return to Serie A after a 2-2 draw with Spezia. The club needed just one point to confirm promotion.

Giovanni Stroppa's team leads Serie B by one point over Frosinone, which can also secure promotion with a win or draw against Mantova next Friday.
