West Ham relegated from Premier League despite win over Leeds; Spurs

West Ham's 15-year stay in the Premier League came to an end on Sunday despite a final-day victory over Leeds United.

The Hammers needed Tottenham to lose at home to Everton to survive, but Spursbeat the Toffees 2-0 to finish two points clear of relegation.

End of an Era

Goals from Taty Castellanos, Jarrod Bowen and Callum Wilson sealed a 3-0 win over Leeds, but it proved meaningless as West Ham were relegated.

With the club facing the drop, supporters vented their anger towards chairman David Sullivan during chants of "We sold our soul" echoing around the London Stadium.

Their brief revival under Nuno Espirito Santo, who replaced Graham Potter in September, began too late and fizzled out early.

Signs of Decline

Relegation comes after a decade since the controversial move to the London Stadium, with the club declining further since David Moyes led them to Conference League glory in 2023.

Supporters point to the sale of Declan Rice to Arsenal for £105million and the subsequent poor investment that followed.

West Ham subsequently cherry-picked cheap players from relegated clubs including James Ward-Prowse, Kyle Walker-Peters and Mateus Fernandes from Southampton, Crysencio Summerville from Leeds and Mads Hermansen from Leicester.

Now history repeats itself, with Bowen, Summerville and Fernandes likely among the first out of the door.

Match Summary

Leeds almost grabbed an early opener when James Justin's cross fell to Lukas Nmecha, but the forward couldn't convert.

Nmecha then created a chance for Dominic Calvert-Lewin, only for Hermansen to make a vital block.

The Hammers grew into the game, with Pablo Felipe's goalbound shot headed over by Pascal Struijk.

The turning point came two minutes before halftime when news filtered through that Joao Palhinha had put Spurs ahead against Everton.

West Ham pressed after the break and broke the deadlock in the 67th minute when Castellanos rose highest at the far post to head home from Bower's corner.

Wilson added the second shortly after Fernandes sent Bowen through, before completing the rout in stoppage time.
