West Ham remain in relegation zone after 3-1 loss to Newcastle

Will Osula scored twice as Newcastle beat West Ham 3-1 at St James' Park on Sunday, leaving the Hammers on the brink of Premier League relegation.

The Danish striker struck either side of half-time, with record signing Nick Woltemade adding the opening goal – his first league goal since December.

Substitute Taty Castellanos scored a spectacular finish for West Ham and cracked the crossbar late on, but it proved mere consolation in a 3-1 defeat.

Trippier tribute marks final appearance

The match carried emotional weight as the Toon Army paid tribute to Kieran Trippier on his final appearance at St James' Park.

Newcastle controlled much of the first half through Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimarães and Jacob Ramsey in midfield.

Osula created the game's first real chance in the 11th minute, his shot being deflected wide.

Magpies cruise to victory

Newcastle opened the scoring after 15 minutes when Harvey Barnes intercepted goalkeeper Mads Hermansen's pass to defender Jean-Clair Todibo, advanced and crossed for Woltemade to side-foot home.

Within four minutes, it was 2-0. Trippier, Barnes, Guimarães and Ramsey combined brilliantly to play Osula through, and he outpaced defender Axel Disasi before firing past Hermansen.

Manager Nuno Espirito Santo made a tactical change after 26 minutes, withdrawing Todibo for Taty and switching from a back three to a four-man formation.

Nick Pope had to react smartly to deny Taty in the 29th minute after Crysencio Summerville had raced past Trippier and pulled the ball back.

West Ham improved after half-time, with Fernandes forcing Pope into action in the 57th minute before Guimarães curled narrowly over at the other end.

Osula grabbed his second with 25 minutes remaining. Joe Willock robbed substitute Pablo, exchanged passes with Osula and crossed for the striker to score.

Taty gave West Ham faint hope four minutes later with a spectacular first-time finish from Hermansen's clearance, then clipped the crossbar as the Magpies slept, but there was no way back.

Hammers facing relegation

Defeat means West Ham will be relegated if Tottenham win at Chelsea. A draw would effectively send them down due to their significantly inferior goal difference.

If Spurs lose at Stamford Bridge, Nuno's men would still need to beat Leeds at home and hope their neighbours lose to Everton to stay up.
