Guardians Place Steven Kwan on Bereavement List

Cleveland — The Guardians placed Steven Kwan on the bereavement/family medical emergency list Thursday, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.

By rule, Kwan will miss the Guardians' next three games and as many as seven contests. The club will make a corresponding roster move prior to Friday's game against the Red Sox.

While Kwan is away, Cleveland could use Chase DeLauter more in the outfield and employ Rhys Hoskins at designated hitter.

Around the Farm: Cleveland Rotation Updates

Travis Bazzana went 2-for-4 with two doubles and a run scored in Wednesday's 3-2 win over the Nationals. Bazzana's multi-hit effort extended a hit streak to five games, during which the rookie has gone 8-for-19 with a home run, five doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. All of that production came as the Guardians' leadoff batter, a role that opened up because of Kwan's season-opening slump.

Chase DeLauter went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored in Wednesday's 3-2 win over Washington. DeLauter's fifth-inning, run-scoring single gave the Guardians a 2-1 lead and snapped an eight-game RBI drought. He entered Thursday having gone 4-for-28 (.143) during that RBI-less stretch. Despite the slump, DeLauter continues to lead Cleveland with 31 RBI.

Cade Smith gave up one run on two hits and struck out two in the ninth inning Wednesday, recording his 19th save of the season in a 3-2 win over the Nationals. Back-to-back singles by Curtis Mead and CJ Abrams to lead off the final frame made things interesting, but Smith buckled down and struck out the last two hitters he faced after giving up a sacrifice fly. The right-hander hasn't blown a save since April 14, reeling off 16 straight successful conversions.
