Real Madrid Challenger Riquelme Hints at Mystery Manager Deal Ahead of Election

Real Madrid's presidential race has taken an unexpected turn. Challenger Enrique Riquelme has suggested he won't appoint José Mourinho if he wins the upcoming election, instead hinting at a mystery manager already lined up.

The 37-year-old绿色energy magnate told reporters this week: "We finalized the coaching deal before announcing my candidacy." He added that the candidate "is under contract with a team." The identity remains undisclosed, though Riquelme has offered clues.

Candidates Ruled Out

Riquelme has clarified his preferred manager is not someone who has previously worked at Real Madrid—ruling out both Mourinho and Zinedine Zidane.

In a campaign video, Riquelme was heard telling colleagues: "If Klopp or Haaland call, you pick up the phone." When directly asked about Jürgen Klopp by The Athletic, he remained evasive: "I cannot say whether he is or is not at this stage. The sporting professionals currently working within the project are handling those discussions."

With Klopp now serving as Global Head of Soccer at Red Bull, invoking his name appears strategic—a clear attempt to differentiate Riquelme's vision from incumbent president Florentino Pérez's plans.

Klopp's Tactical Preferences

Klopp's teams are known for gegenpressing and aggressive counter-attacking football. His midfield units prioritize industry and combativeness, while centerbacks must be dominant in the air.

RB Leipzig and Red Bull Salzburg have primarily employed 4-3-3 or 4-2-3-1 formations this season—tactical systems adaptable to Madrid's squad.
