Fernandes breaks record in Man United win, Brighton settle for Conference League

Manchester United secured a commanding 3-0 victory over Brighton in Michael Carrick's first match as permanent manager, with Bruno Fernandes setting a new Premier League assist record.

The Seagulls finished eighth in the table, settling for a place in the Conference League next season after a disappointing conclusion to their campaign.

Record-Breaking Performance

United captain Fernandes provided the assist for Patrick Dorgu's opening goal, moving him clear of Kevin De Bruyne and Thierry Henry's previous record of 20 assists.

Bryan Mbeumo doubled the lead in the closing minutes of the first half, before Fernandes capped off an outstanding display by scoring the third early in the second period.

Carrick's Winning Start

Carrick, who signed a two-year contract on Friday, has now overseen 12 wins from 17 top-flight games since taking charge.

The former Red Devils midfielder made three changes following last weekend's victory over Nottingham Forest and watched his side control the contest.

Brighton's Frustrating End

Brighton began the final day in pole position for a Europa League place but slipped to eighth, missing out on European football entirely.

Goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen produced smart stops to deny Dorgu a second goal, while Diego Gomez and substitute Solly March went close for the home side.

Despite a morale-boosting achievement of securing European football for only the second time in the club's history, Brighton's players and fans were left to reflect on a campaign that promised more.
