Kenny Atkinson Defends Cavs Despite 3-0 Series Deficit Versus Knicks

Cleveland Cavaliers head coach Kenny Atkinson made headlines with controversial comments about his team's playoff situation, claiming the Cavs are actually "winning" when looking at advanced statistics.

Atkinson's Analytical Defense

The Cavs trail the New York Knicks 3-0 in the Eastern Conference Finals. No team in NBA history has ever overcome a 3-0 deficit in a playoff series.

During media availability on Sunday, Atkinson offered a somewhat defender of his team's position:

"Analytically, we're two out of three in the expected [score]," Atkinson said. "I don't know if you guys follow that, the expected score. And I know you're looking confused."

Atkinson acknowledged that his message might not resonate with most basketball fans:

"I know no one wants to hear that. With the general public, everyone is outcome-based."

The coach emphasized that his team generated quality scoring opportunities throughout the series, noting the Cavs shot "way below" expected numbers in Game 3 while the Knicks shot "way over."

Doc Rivers Comparison Draws Criticism

Atkinson's remarks drew immediate comparisons to Doc Rivers, another coach known for controversial postgame statements. Rivers famously defended his teams after blowing 3-1 playoff leads with the Orlando Magic in 2003 and the Los Angeles Clippers in 2015 and 2020.

"I don't get enough credit for the three wins," Rivers said last year. "I get credit for losing... One of the things that I'm proud of is we've never been swept."

Critics pointed out that drawing parallels to Rivers—widely considered one of the more memorable figures in NBA playoff history for all the wrong reasons—wasn't the best approach for Atkinson.

Social Media Roasts Atkinson's Comments

The internet quickly responded with criticism and memes targeting Atkinson's analytical defense. Fans and analysts universally panned the comments as tone-deaf given the team's dire playoff situation.

The Knicks are now headed to their first NBA Finals since 1999. On the actual scoreboard, Cleveland faces elimination with virtually no path to advancing.
