PISA, Italy (AP) — Lecce beat Pisa 2-1 on Friday, condemning the Tuscan club to immediate relegation back to Serie B after just one season in Italy's top flight.
Pisa won only two of its 35 Serie A games this campaign, finishing rock bottom of the table. The defeat cemented their return to the second division.
The result also confirmed relegation for Verona, who sit second-from-bottom with 19 points — just one more than Pisa. Lecce moved four points clear of the relegation zone with three matches remaining.
Match details: Lameck Banda gave Pisa a 52nd-minute lead, but Mehdi Léris equalized just four minutes later. Walid Cheddira scored the 65th-minute winner for visiting Lecce.
Serie B update: Venezia secured promotion after a 2-2 draw with Spezia. Giovanni Stroppa's side leads the table, one point ahead of Frosinone, who can join them in the top tier with a result against Mantova next Friday.
