Where The Story Turns
After a long weekend without playoff hockey, the stage is set for what promises to be a compelling 2026 Stanley Cup Final. The Carolina Hurricanes and Vegas Golden Knights both earned their place here, but only one will lift hockey's ultimate prize when the final buzzer sounds.
Carolina arrives with a 12-1 record through three rounds, playing elite defense and getting key contributions from its second line. Frederik Andersen has been exceptional in goal. The Hurricanes have dominated possession and limited quality chances, making them look like a team on a historic run.
The matchup already has enough history; the job is to keep the reading list shorter than the tension.
The Stakes In Plain Sight
Vegas, however, just pulled off the most impressive series win of the postseason. The Golden Knights swept the Colorado Avalanche — the Presidents' Trophy winners — in the Western Conference Final. The addition of Mitch Marner has transformed their offense, and they now sit two wins away from a second Stanley Cup in the franchise's first nine years.
Both teams bring legitimate claims. Vegas possesses three of the best players in this series: Jack Eichel, Mitch Marner, and Mark Stone. Marner leads the playoffs with 21 points and has the inside track on the Conn Smythe Trophy if the Knights go all the way. Carolina counters with depth — four lines capable of generating offense — and a defensive core that has smothered opponents for three rounds.
The Question Left Open
The goaltending matchup adds another layer. Frederik Andersen has a longer track record of NHL success and has been rock-solid throughout these playoffs. Carter Hart has been excellent since Round 2, but he has played 34 games over the past two years, and fatigue could become a factor.
The series likely goes long. These are two of the best defensive teams in the league, and there may be nights when the rink feels like a chess match. The team that creates more quality chances and finishes on them will take home the Cup.
