Where The Pressure Lands
The tournament lands in North America for the first time in 40 years, and two Group A matches will get things rolling in Mexico. Host nation Mexico kicks off against South Africa at Estadio Banorte in Mexico City, while South Korea faces Czechia at Akron stadium in Zapopan.
Mexico is hosting the World Cup for the third time—1970, 1986, and now 2026—making the country the first to host the tournament three times. They were eliminated in the quarter-finals both previous occasions. The 2022 edition marked the first time since 1990 that Mexico failed to escape the group stage, finishing with a 1-1-1 record.
The matchup already has enough history; the job is to keep the reading list shorter than the tension.
Gilberto Mora, a 17-year-old midfielder for Tijuana in Liga MX, recorded four goals this season and became the youngest player to appear for Mexico's senior team last year. He will feature in a World Cup for the first time. Javier Aguirre is coaching Mexico at the World Cup for the third time in his career, having led the team to round-of-16 finishes in 2002 and 2010.
The Detail That Tilts It
South Africa is making its first World Cup appearance since hosting the tournament in 2010. They stunned France that year with a 2-1 group-stage upset but became the first host team eliminated in the group stage. Midfielder Teboho Mokoena scored four goals this season with Mamelodi Sundowns in the South African Premiership. Belgian Hugo Broos has coached South Africa since 2021 and previously led Cameroon to an Africa Cup of Nations title in 2017.
South Korea is competing in its 12th World Cup, the most of any Asian nation. They reached the round of 16 in 2022 before losing to Brazil and haven't advanced past that stage since finishing fourth in 2002. Son Heung-min, who plays for Los Angeles FC in MLS, will appear at his fourth World Cup and is still searching for his first tournament goal. He recorded 127 goals in 333 matches during a decade with Tottenham Hotspur.
Coach Hong Myung-bo is leading South Korea at the World Cup for the second time, having previously guided them to the round of 16 in 2014. He captained the team when South Korea reached the semi-finals in 2002.
What The Result Leaves
Czechia qualified for their first World Cup since 2006 by defeating Demark in a 2-2 penalty shootout during UEFA playoffs. Vladimir Darida came out of international retirement to help his country qualify, scoring 11 goals this season with Hradec Králové. He previously captained Czechia at Euro 2021, where they lost in the quarter-finals. Miroslav Koubec will coach Czechia at the World Cup for the first time after taking over in late 2025.
