Borussia Dortmund beats Freiburg 4-0 to seal Champions League spot

BERLIN — Borussia Dortmund secured Champions League qualification on Sunday with a commanding 4-0 victory over Freiburg in the Bundesliga.

First-Half Surge

Maximilian Beier, Serhou Guirassy, and Ramy Bensebaini all found the net within the first half-hour, establishing a comfortable lead for Dortmund.

Goalkeeper Gregor Kobel preserved the clean sheet by denying Cyriaque Irié's late attempt on goal.

CL Spot Sealed

With three rounds remaining, Dortmund is guaranteed to finish among the top four and earn a place in Europe's premier club competition.

Youth Movement

Dortmund coach Niko Kovač gave Samuele Inacio his first start, and the 18-year-old Italian forward earned enthusiastic applause when substituted in the 74th minute.

U.S. Under-17 international Mathis Albert came on for the final minutes to make his Dortmund debut. The 16-year-old from Greenville, South Carolina, joined Dortmund's academy in 2025 from LA Galaxy's academy and represented the U.S. at last year's Under-17 World Cup.

Freiburg's Challenges

Freiburg coach Julian Schuster made several lineup changes following the team's painful German Cup semifinal defeat to Stuttgart on Thursday.

The squad now turns attention to a Europa League semifinal clash, traveling to face Sporting Braga away in the first leg.

Freiburg's 18-year-old midfielder Rouven Tarnutzer made his debut late in the match.

Bundesliga Battle

Stuttgart's Champions League aspirations received a setback after a 1-1 draw with Werder Bremen. Ermedin Demirović cancelled out Jens Stage's early goal, keeping Stuttgart in fourth place on goal difference from Hoffenheim ahead of their pivotal showdown next weekend.

Both Stuttgart and Hoffenheim sit on 57 points, holding a two-point buffer over Bayer Leverkusen in the qualification race.

Bremen's point moves the club six clear of St. Pauli in the relegation zone.

Bayern Munich already secured the Bundesliga title last weekend and will face Stuttgart in the German Cup final on May 23.
