West Ham's 14-year stay in the Premier League is almost over after a 3-1 defeat to Newcastle. The London club lost at St James' Park on Sunday and remains in the relegation zone, two points from safety with one match left.
The Hammers will play their final game at home against Leeds United at the Olympic Stadium next Sunday.
Relegation could be confirmed earlier. If Tottenham beats Chelsea away on Tuesday in the first of its two remaining games, West Ham will be relegated before playing their final match.
A draw at Stamford Bridge would likely be enough for Tottenham, given their superior goal difference over West Ham.
Tottenham's second chance to secure survival comes at home to Everton in the final round.
Newcastle thrash Hammers
Newcastle scored twice in the first 19 minutes through Nick Woltemade and William Osula.
Osula added a third in the 65th minute before Taty Castellanos scored a brilliant long-range consolation for West Ham.
Castellanos also hit the crossbar for the Hammers.
West Ham's fall from grace
West Ham has been in the top flight since 2012. The club came through several relegation battles in that time.
This season appears beyond the team — three years after winning the Conference League title for its first major trophy since 1980.
That victory was once seen as a sign of brighter things to come.
