Lecce Victory Condemns Pisa, Verona to Relegation in Serie A

PISA, Italy (AP) — Lecce beat Pisa 2-1 on Friday, sending the Tuscan club back to Serie B and sealing Verona's relegation.

Pisa was promoted from Serie B one year ago but returns to the second tier after a dismal season in which it won only two of its 35 matches.

Verona's fate was also sealed as the club sits second-from-bottom with 19 points. Lecce now sits four points above the relegation zone with three matches remaining.

Lameck Banda put Pisa ahead in the 52nd minute, but Mehdi Léris equalized four minutes later.

Walid Cheddira scored the winning goal in the 65th minute to lift Lecce to safety.

In Serie B, Venezia secured promotion with a 2-2 draw against Spezia.

Giovanni Stroppa's team tops the Serie B table, one point ahead of Frosinone, which can also secure promotion with a win or draw against Mantova next Friday.
