Everton surrender lead twice at Palace, European hopes suffer huge blow

Crystal Palace 2-2 Everton — Jean-Philippe Mateta came off the bench to rescue a point as Everton's European qualification hopes were dealt a huge blow at Selhurst Park.

Early Everton Lead

Everton took the lead after just six minutes when Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall sent over a corner and the ball was inadvertently helped by a Palace defender to James Tarkowski, who knocked it home on the volley at the far post.

A frantic 30 seconds saw Jordan Pickford make a brilliant save from Maxence Lacroix before Henderson spread himself to deny Dewsbury-Hall. Both England goalkeepers produced fine work in front of watching Thomas Tuchel.

Palace Fight Back

The hosts deservedly equalised 10 minutes before half-time. Michael Keane's clearance was poor, achieving neither distance nor height, and Ismaïla Sarr took full advantage to thump the loose ball past Pickford.

The first half had been hugely open. Tarkowski had earlier tapped Everton into the lead from an early corner before Sarr thumped Palace level following a botched attempt by Keane to clear.

Iliman Ndiaye had a golden chance to restore Everton's lead in the final minute of the half but his header lacked power and was cleared off the line by Sarr.

Beto Scores Brilliant Winner

Visiting fans did not have to wait long to celebrate in the second half. Under 90 seconds after the restart, Beto raced onto Tarkowski's ball over the top and showed wonderful strength and skill to hold off Lacroix, muscling his way into the six-yard box before finishing calmly.

The goal looked like being the winner for Everton — a wonderful individual effort combining power and deftness of touch. Victory would have moved the visitors onto 51 points, level with Brentford in eighth and two points off the last guaranteed European qualification berth.

Palace Grab Late Equaliser

Palace's pressure increased, and in the 76th minute Mateta was on the spot to finish from Tyrick Mitchell's pass to keep spirits high ahead of their date with Rayo Vallecano in Leipzig on May 27.

Adam Wharton struck a post in stoppage time with a bullet effort from outside the box, before Mateta botched a glorious opening when clean through. A goal then would have been hard on Everton.

Everton surrender a two-goal lead and now face an uphill battle to secure European football this season.
